Apple’s first foldable iPhone, widely referred to as the iPhone Ultra, has moved closer to production as Samsung Display begins manufacturing OLED panels for the upcoming model. The development indicates a major step in Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone segment, which has been led by several Android manufacturers for years.

Samsung OLED Production for Apple Foldable

Samsung Display has reportedly started mass production of OLED panels for both the inner and outer screens of Apple’s upcoming foldable device. The panels are built on Samsung’s latest M16 emissive material technology, which is designed to improve brightness levels, extend display life, and reduce visible screen creasing.

The move continues a long-standing supply relationship between Apple and Samsung Display. The tech giant has relied heavily on Samsung for advanced display technology across its product range. The foldable iPhone project further strengthens this partnership at a time when demand for high-end flexible screens is increasing globally.

Industry observers note that Samsung’s role in supplying displays to Apple is still substantial, even as the two companies compete in the broader smartphone market through Samsung’s Galaxy lineup.

Display Size and Design Direction

Leaks around the device suggest a dual-screen setup. The outer display is expected to measure around 5.5 inches, while the internal foldable screen could be close to 7.8 inches. Both panels are expected to use advanced OLED technology to improve durability and visual performance.

Samsung’s newer display innovations will likely play a key role in reducing the crease effect, a common challenge in foldable devices. The development places Apple in direct competition with existing foldables such as the OPPO Find N series, which currently leads in crease management.

Hardware and Performance Expectations

iPhone Ultra is expected to be launched along with the iPhone 18 series. It may use Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process and could also include the new C2 modem.

The battery is likely to be much larger than before, with a capacity between 5,500 mAh and 5,800 mAh, making it one of Apple’s biggest batteries yet.

On the camera side, the phone may have a dual rear setup with wide and ultrawide lenses. However, Apple might skip a telephoto lens. The inner display could feature an under-display camera, while the outer screen may use a punch-hole front camera.

Authentication Shift and Market Positioning

Leaks also suggest a change in how users unlock the device. The phone may use Touch ID instead of Face ID, which would be a clear shift from recent Apple models.

The device is shaping up to be an important launch in its product line, with Samsung supplying key display parts and Apple working on a foldable design. Its success will depend on how it competes with existing foldable phones already in the market.
