Apple is preparing for Siri’s major redesign in iOS 27, aiming to turn it into a complete AI chatbot. According to a Bloomberg report, the upgrade positions Siri to compete directly with services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. This marks the biggest shift for Siri since its launch in 2011. The tech giant is expected to announce the news at WWDC 2026 (8–12 June) and release it publicly in September 2026.
The new Siri interface will appear as a pill-shaped animation within Dynamic Island when activated. Queries will open a transparent response card that can be expanded into a chat-like view. The design is closer to messaging apps than traditional voice assistant applications.
Apple is also testing a ‘Search or Ask’ style interaction system that works across apps. This signals a shift from command-based input to continuous conversation-based usage.
For the first time, Siri will reportedly have a standalone app in iOS 27. The app will store conversation history, allowing users to revisit past queries. It will include a grid layout for past chats, a search bar, and an option to start new conversations.
Users will also be able to type or upload images and documents. This brings Siri closer to modern AI chat tools that maintain persistent memory of interactions.
Apple is planning to allow third-party chatbot integration beyond its current limited setup. Users may be able to select alternative AI systems for features like Writing Tools and Image Playground.
The system-wide search interface will connect apps, web results, and AI responses in one place. Siri will still remain the default assistant, but users will gain more control over which AI service they use.
The update will introduce more contextual cards in Siri responses. These may include weather, reminders, notes, and calendar events.
Apple is also redesigning Image Playground with simpler controls and improved image generation. The Camera, Photos, Wallet, and Shortcuts apps are also expected to receive updates alongside iOS 27.
Apple’s move shows a clear response to rising competition in conversational AI. The shift is not just a design upgrade. It is a repositioning of Siri as a productivity-driven AI layer inside iOS. If execution works, Apple could reduce dependency on external AI tools and strengthen its ecosystem control. The real challenge will be matching the speed and flexibility already set by ChatGPT-style assistants in daily use.
