Tereina, a payments company in which SAP owns a stake, has launched a service that allows businesses to make payments directly from SAP’s business software. The service supports both traditional currencies and stablecoins.
The launch adds payment functions inside software that companies already use to manage and track their finances. Until now, SAP customers had to connect external payment providers for these transactions, Tereina CEO Cedric Bru said.
SAP Pay is available to SAP customers through their existing contracts. Tereina is positioning the service as a native payment option built into the software environment used by businesses.
Tereina says it will work with other payment providers rather than compete directly with them. The company claims this model can reduce payment costs by 25%. The service can be used to pay suppliers, employees and affiliated businesses. Stablecoin support gives companies another option for moving money through the SAP platform.
Bru compared the service with Apple Pay, describing it as a payment service built into the software where it operates. He also declined to disclose the size of SAP’s stake in Tereina. The launch gives SAP a more direct role in the payments process. The company had previously stopped short of offering payments within its core business software.
Tereina developed the service over two and a half years. Most of that work took place during the past 18 months, according to Reuters. The company has a staff of a few dozen people based in San Francisco. It also used AI coding tools during the development of its platform.
The launch reflects a broader effort to connect business software with financial services. Tereina’s integration with SAP gives companies a way to manage payment activity from the same environment they use for financial operations.
SAP’s financial software already tracks business money flows. Tereina’s technology adds the ability to execute those payments within that existing system, extending the role of the platform from financial management into transaction processing.
