Apple has confirmed reports of cracks appearing on the inner screen of its USD 1,999 iPhone Duo. The company has asked affected users to contact AppleCare for help with replacements. The complaints started within hours of the foldable phone's release on Friday, October 23, 2026.

In a statement to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on October 26, Apple said: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

The company has not disclosed how many devices are affected. Apple has said the problem involves a limited number of units and typically appears soon after use. Its engineering team is investigating the issue and collecting damaged devices for examination, according to Bloomberg's reporting.

Hinge Area Emerges

Reports suggest the damage is concentrated near the inner screen's central hinge. Some owners have described a stiff hinge, an unusual bump beneath the display or a crunching sound before cracks appear. Bright lines have also been reported along the crease and the right side of the screen.

An iFixit teardown analysis offers a possible explanation. Its simulations suggest the hinge's central bar may not descend far enough when the phone closes. This could create pressure near the display cable gap and contribute to the damage. The theory has not been confirmed by Apple.

Apple's response has also raised concerns about replacement availability. Bloomberg reported that some customers have faced delays while trying to replace their damaged phones. In one case, a store did not have a replacement device ready. Another customer was asked to send the damaged phone by mail before receiving a replacement.

Owners who notice unusual resistance while opening or closing the phone should contact AppleCare for help. They should not force the hinge if it feels stuck or makes an unusual cracking sound. Getting the device checked can help prevent further damage.

The screen issue has created an early problem for Apple's foldable phone launch. Priced at USD 1,999, the iPhone Duo competes with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the premium foldable phone market. Apple has not yet confirmed the exact cause of the cracks. It has also not revealed how many devices have been affected.

Potential buyers are now waiting for clearer answers about the problem. They want to know how common the screen damage is and how quickly Apple can provide replacements. The company's ongoing investigation could help explain the issue as more customers begin using the phone.
