Apple may not have unveiled a foldable iPhone at WWDC 2026, but its latest software updates are generating fresh industry speculation. According to tipster Sam Henri Gold, new code references in iOS 27 may point to enhanced multitasking capabilities that could support future foldable devices.
Although Apple did not mention its foldable devices directly at the keynote, the software discoveries have certainly caught its attention.
According to Gold’s X post, “the new code discovered in iOS 27 includes references such as ‘foldState’ and ‘angleDegrees’. These terms are closely linked to a foldable device, and as the name suggests, it may be used to give the OS a clear instruction about what to do when the device is folded or bent at a certain angle.”
These capabilities are important for foldable phones because they must adapt between different screen sizes and display modes. This means it becomes easier for people to switch from one screen configuration to another.
The features mentioned above are present on many foldable Android models, reinforcing suspicions that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone. It should be noted that Apple has never announced such an innovation. At its WWDC 2026 event, Apple focused mainly on developments like Apple Intelligence and Siri, as well as the introduction of the Liquid Glass design language.
According to industry reports, iOS 27 has been designed to enable applications to function smoothly on screens of different sizes. Furthermore, Apple is said to have improved experiences in landscape mode and multitasking.
However, none of the software innovations introduced at the conference were related to a future foldable iPhone. As always, Apple develops software for new gadgets long before their release.
Analysts indicate that Apple is working on developing a book-shaped foldable smartphone. The device might include a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner display. Although various launch dates have been indicated by analysts, most predict the device will launch in either late 2026 or early 2027.
