Apple TV premiered Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook, a new eight-episode culinary docuseries led by actor, comedian and Golden Globe winner Awkwafina. The show premiered globally on Friday, November 6, 2026, with the first two episodes available on the streaming platform.

The series follows Nora Lum, known professionally as Awkwafina, as she attempts to revive Lum’s, her family’s iconic Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. The central challenge is clear: she has inherited the family legacy but not the cooking skills. 'I can’t cook. Like, at all,' she says in the series.

A Cross-Country Culinary Journey

The docuseries tracks Awkwafina on a road trip across the United States as she builds her kitchen confidence and explores contemporary Asian American cuisine. Her journey includes a crash course at the Culinary Institute of America, a Texas barbecue trip with actor Jimmy O. Yang, and lessons from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan.

In Hawaii, she examines the tiki culture that influenced her grandmother’s restaurant. She later works in a restaurant in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, where she faces the pressures of professional service.

Family Legacy Meets Modern Food

The series frames food as both a personal inheritance and a living cultural tradition. Awkwafina works with acclaimed chefs, restaurateurs and family members to reimagine Lum’s for a new generation while preserving its Cantonese roots.

The season builds towards a high-stakes opening night. Its most demanding guest is Awkwafina’s grandmother, whose approval carries the greatest emotional weight.
