Daiwa Securities warned that information belonging to around 110,000 clients may have been leaked after an external vendor’s server suffered unauthorised access. Reportedly, the incident involved a system used to manage customer inquiries and did not directly affect Daiwa Securities’ own systems.
The potential exposure includes names, email addresses and securities account numbers. When records that do not contain personally identifiable information are included, the total number of potentially affected records rises to about 220,000.
The unauthorised access occurred at Scala Communications, a systems company that provides inquiry management services to Daiwa Securities. According to the company’s disclosure, the intrusion took place between the evening of October 2 and the morning of October 3.
Scala Communications notified Daiwa Securities after detecting evidence that customer information may have been accessed. The vendor has since implemented emergency security measures. Daiwa said it has not identified any further unauthorised access or additional data leakage so far.
The incident highlights the cybersecurity risks financial companies face when they rely on third-party technology providers. Even when a company’s own systems remain secure, vulnerabilities at connected vendors can expose sensitive customer information.
Daiwa Securities said, “The potentially leaked information cannot be used on its own to access customers’ securities accounts or conduct online transactions. The company also did not detect any unauthorised transactions linked to the incident.”
There is also no indication so far that the potentially exposed information has been publicly released or circulated online. Daiwa is continuing its investigation to determine the precise scope and nature of the information involved.
However, the exposure of names, email addresses and account numbers could create a secondary risk. Cybercriminals could potentially use such information to make phishing emails or fraudulent calls appear more credible.
