Google is bringing its Guided Learning feature to Search and Classroom. The company is adding AI-powered study tools to help students learn while giving schools more control over which AI features they can access.
The update will help students understand different subjects through simple explanations and step-by-step guidance. Instead of giving students direct answers, the tools will encourage them to think and solve problems on their own. Google is also changing access rules for its AI products used by students from kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12).
Chris Phillips, Google's Vice President and General Manager of Education, said the new features are part of the company's effort to develop AI tools that help students learn better while working closely with teachers and educators.
Google's Guided Learning approach focuses on what the company calls ‘productive struggle’. The method encourages students to work through difficult questions without feeling overwhelmed. Within Gemini, the feature acts as an interactive study assistant. It uses open-ended questions and step-by-step explanations to help students understand problems.
Google is bringing similar learning features to Search for student accounts. When students search for help with homework, Search will guide them through the topic instead of showing only a direct answer. This will apply to questions on subjects such as physics and help with book reports. The feature will ask questions that help students think independently and understand the topic better.
Google Classroom will also let teachers assign Guided Learning activities to students. These activities will provide personal study support using materials shared in the classroom. Teachers will also be able to see which topics students find difficult and where they need more help. Google said it tested the feature with schools and teachers before making it available more widely.

Google is changing access settings for Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search. Under the new rules, these tools will be turned off by default for K-12 student accounts. School administrators will have to turn them on before students can use them. Google said it will provide more information about these changes in the coming months.
Guided Learning is available worldwide in Google Classroom from November 4, 2026. Google Search will first test the feature in selected schools across the US later this month. The company will gather feedback from these schools before making the feature available to more school districts.
