Google has delayed the launch of its next major artificial intelligence model, Gemini 3.5 Pro. According to a Bloomberg report, the system has not met the company’s internal performance targets. The model is now running months behind its expected timeline as engineers continue to improve its capabilities.

The delay has reportedly caused frustration among some employees working on the project. The report states that current and former Google employees are concerned about the slow progress while competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic continue to advance their AI systems.

Development Challenges

Google was expected to introduce Gemini 3.5 Pro at its annual developer conference in May. The company decided against the launch after finding that the model was not ready for release. Coding performance has come out as one of the major areas requiring improvement.

The report confirmed that Google recently changed the training data used for the model to improve coding abilities. However, the updates did not deliver the expected results. The model is part of Google’s wider effort to compete in the fast-moving AI market. The company has been developing AI tools across several divisions, including Google Cloud, DeepMind, and Android teams.

Google’s Internal Hurdles

The Bloomberg report said Google’s large organizational structure may be slowing AI development. Multiple teams are working on different AI coding tools, creating competition for computing resources and internal coordination challenges.

“Efforts to win at coding have also been up against some engineers at Google with a more purist stance, who believe that all important code should be human-written to adhere to Google standards”, ex-employees said. The report also said several levels of decision-making are involved before a model moves towards release. Some employees believe this process has affected the speed of development.

Google Responds

Google has rejected claims that it is falling behind rivals. In a statement, the company said,  “Currently testing 3.5 Pro, an upgraded Flash model, and other models with partners. We’re shipping quickly across a wide range of models while keeping them highly cost-effective for customers.”

Google is also evaluating an upgraded Flash model and other AI systems. The company said it is working with the US government on discussions related to AI testing and safety standards. The timeline for the public release of Gemini 3.5 Pro has not been announced yet.
