Google announced Wear OS 7 at its I/O 2026 developer conference. The update brings improved battery life, enhanced AI features, and a more useful smartwatch interface. Google confirms it offers up to 10% better battery performance than Wear OS 6. Some upcoming smartwatches will also receive Gemini Intelligence for more advanced voice and AI interactions.
Wear OS 7 brings deeper Gemini integration to smartwatches. Users will be able to provide more detailed voice commands and complete tasks without opening apps. For example, you can start a workout through a simple voice request using supported fitness apps.
Gemini can also handle connected actions that normally need multiple steps on a phone. This makes the smartwatch more independent for daily tasks.
Google has added app task automation in Wear OS 7. Users can order food and track deliveries directly from the watch, reducing the need to use a phone for basic tasks.
Live Updates is another key feature. It shows real-time information from apps like delivery services, ride apps, maps, and fitness tools directly on the watch face or interface.
Wear OS 7 adds new widgets in small and large sizes to show key information quickly without opening apps.
Media controls have also improved. Users can choose which apps show playback controls automatically. A new audio switcher lets users move sound between a phone, earbuds, and a smartwatch easily.
Fitness tracking is also more consistent across apps, with support from ASICS Runkeeper. Watch faces get improved design flexibility with Watch Face Format version 5.
Wear OS 7 will roll out later in 2026. However, Google has not confirmed supported devices yet. The update clearly aims to reduce phone dependence and make smartwatches more useful with improved AI, automation, and battery efficiency.
