OpenAI expanded ChatGPT beyond its app. Users can now text a ChatGPT Dot directly through Google Messages on Android, using RCS messaging. The feature allows the AI assistant to hold a conversation in the same thread. It can also send photos and voice notes, making the interaction feel closer to messaging a regular contact.
The bigger change is that ChatGPT Dots can initiate messages. If a user asks the assistant to track a product price or monitor a task, the Dot can send an update without being prompted.
For example, a Dot could alert a shopper when an item becomes cheaper or share the status of an ongoing request. OpenAI says the assistant can also send relevant photos and voice notes as part of these updates. ChatGPT Dots retain context from previous conversations and connected plugins. Users can therefore begin a task in the ChatGPT app and continue it later through Google Messages.
This reduces the need to repeat instructions. It also positions the assistant as a persistent digital helper rather than a tool that works only inside a separate application.
OpenAI said enabling texting does not give ChatGPT Dot access to a user’s other message threads. The conversation remains between the user and their Dot.
The company has positioned the feature as a preview. It is initially available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, suggesting a wider rollout may depend on user response and technical performance.
For Google, the development highlights the growing importance of RCS as a richer messaging layer. For users, it raises a practical question: how much proactive AI communication they want in their personal inbox.
