Google’s first-generation Chromecast devices are experiencing a major worldwide outage. Users across multiple countries reported that the streaming dongle has suddenly stopped working on several popular apps.

Complaints have surged on Reddit, Google forums, and social media over the past few days. Users say the original Chromecast no longer appears as a casting option on apps such as YouTube, HBO Max, and Netflix. Some owners reported that Spotify and Disney+ still worked, while others said their devices had become completely unusable.

Users Say Devices Vanished Overnight

Several users claimed the issue started without warning. Many said their Chromecast worked normally until earlier this week. It later disappeared from the Google Home app or failed to connect to televisions.

The affected model is the first-generation Chromecast launched by Google in 2013. Google ended official software and security support for the first-generation Chromecast in 2023. The company had warned users that performance issues could increase over time.

Cause Remains Unclear

Google is yet to address the current issue. It has been rumored that the problem may be related to the backend rather than the product’s hardware.

Users attempted factory resets and tested their Internet connection; however, neither solution was effective. Users also stated that their devices still failed to connect to supported apps.

The inconsistency of the issue has made it difficult to determine whether the problem is temporary.

Shift Toward Newer Streaming Devices

Moreover, the blackout raises questions about the viability of smart home and streaming products when support is no longer available. These products often continue working for years after support ends, unless server-side issues occur.

Over time, Google shifted toward Google TV devices that offer smarter features, built-in apps, and voice controls. The unexpected crash of the Chromecast impacts the brand’s value.
