Grok’s AI-powered voice mode is now available on Apple CarPlay, enabling hands-free conversational AI interactions directly within supported vehicles. Apple originally added support for AI chatbots in CarPlay in February. Since CarPlay focuses on hands-free use, voice features could make it easier to access information or perform tasks without touching the screen.
Apple CarPlay users got another AI assistant option for their cars: Grok. SpaceXAI (SpaceX's AI-focused subsidiary) announced that Grok's voice mode is now available in Apple CarPlay on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Technically, Grok was already available on CarPlay, but it was just a placeholder app that displayed a "coming soon" message. Now, users can tap on the Grok icon to launch a new voice chat and start chatting with the assistant.
Some Tesla drivers, on the other hand, do get the luxury of invoking Grok with a "Hey Grok" voice command. The functionality was added in the company's latest "spring update," though availability varies by region. Users can also switch between voices directly from the CarPlay menu. This makes the AI feel a bit more personal during driving. Users do not need any special car setups to use it, just the updated phone app.
Having these chatbots in the car gives drivers an easy way to ask questions, learn new things, or just pass the time on long trips. It turns a basic commute into a chance to have a real conversation with a smart helper.

Grok is one of the AI chatbots integrated with CarPlay, joining tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity AI. This points to a broader trend in which AI assistants are being adapted for in-car use, allowing drivers to interact via voice commands for information and basic tasks.
At present, there are no indications that Google Gemini will be added to CarPlay. However, reports suggest that Gemini models could power future updates to Siri. Apple is also working on a more advanced version of Siri that could eventually extend to CarPlay.
