Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will not use generative AI when it launches, clearing up what the studio means when it says the game has ‘no AI’.
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, confirmed the absence of generative AI during a preview of the game. The clarification is important since GTA 6 will still use traditional AI systems for several parts of its gameplay.
Artificial intelligence has been part of the Grand Theft Auto series for years. In GTA 6, AI will continue to control traffic, pedestrians, and police behavior.
These systems allow vehicles to respond to road incidents and pedestrians to react to events around them. Police characters can also coordinate during pursuits across the game world.
What Rockstar is ruling out is generative AI. This technology can create dialogue, textures and other game assets automatically. Rockstar instead continues to rely heavily on content created by its developers and artists.
Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick has previously described Rockstar’s approach as building its game worlds manually rather than generating them through AI tools.
The scale of that work is significant. GTA 6 is reportedly expected to feature more than 600,000 animations. GTA 5 had around 55,000, while Red Dead Redemption 2 had about 300,000.
Rockstar also confirmed that GTA 6 will not include a system allowing players to spend real money on items within the game.
The standard edition will cost USD 79.99, while the Ultimate Edition is priced at USD 99.99. The higher-priced version includes additional cosmetic content, vehicles, weapons, and shops. Rockstar has also said standard-edition players can upgrade later.
The studio has not revealed details about the next version of GTA Online. This leaves questions around how the online mode could handle monetization when it eventually launches. GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
