Rockstar Games faces a data breach just as anticipation builds for Grand Theft Auto VI. The company said that the incident did not originate from its core systems. The mishap took place due to a compromised third-party service provider.
According to reports, the “supply chain” breaches have increased just after the company announced the launch of its new gaming series.
The ransomware group named ShinyHunters has targeted Rockstar Games as its victim on the dark web leak site. This site is often used by hackers to pressure victims into paying ransom quickly and execute successful attacks. As reported by Forbes, Rockstar has to pay up by April 14. If the demand is not fulfilled, then the attackers will release or sell the allegedly stolen data online.
In a message posted by the hacker group wrote, “ Rockstar Games, your Snowflake instances were compromised thanks to Anodot.com. Pay or leak. This is a final warning to reach out by 14 Apr 2026 before we leak, along with several annoying (digital) problems that’ll come your way.” This post was made on a dark web leak site.
A Rockstar Games spokesperson explained in the report, “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organisation or our players.”
Experts suggest that the attack was not aimed directly at Rockstar’s internal systems. The hackers first breached a SaaS cloud-cost monitoring tool used by Rockstar. Thus, allowing them to obtain authentication tokens. Using the stolen tokens, the hackers successfully accessed another cloud-based data platform used by the company. Ahead of the attacks, Rockstar claims that the impact is limited and does not affect its players.
