Huawei dropped a new foldable phone, and the timing is interesting. The Mate XT2 model is out right when Apple and Xiaomi are entering the same space.
Huawei’s premium phone folds three ways and opens up into a small tablet. The price starts at CNY 19,999 (~USD 2,980) and goes up to CNY 24,999 (~USD 3,725). It's available on the market from September 12 and runs on the new Kirin 9050 Pro chip.
The company reworked the hinge, improved water resistance and cameras, and included a privacy screen mode as well. Huawei claims that the flagship is 42% faster than the older model.
Huawei is manufacturing premium phones despite US restrictions. It has named its new approach 'LogicFolding,' which is built on the Tau Scaling Law. The company has designed the chip such that it performs well without quickly draining the battery.
Huawei occupied 23% of China’s phone market during the previous quarter, while Apple and Xiaomi held 12% and 18%, respectively. Huawei also leads in the foldable phone space, with almost 7 out of 10 sold foldable phones in China belonging to the company.
Xiaomi is also rolling out its foldable phone, and Apple is rumored to unveil a folding iPhone, along with its usual lineup drop on September 9. If Apple catches buyers’ attention, foldable iPhones may go mainstream, leaving Huawei and Xiaomi to compete harder.
