Apple plans to allow iPhones to stream directly to devices powered by Google Cast. The aim is to reduce dependence on AirPlay. This change is likely to be incorporated in a future iOS update, marking a shift in Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem.

Currently, iPhones depend mainly on AirPlay for wireless streaming. Google Cast works only within select apps like YouTube. A system-level integration would change that dynamic.

Apple Eyes Google Cast Support for iPhones

The reported shift comes as Apple responds to Europe’s Digital Markets Act.  The legal requirement forces big technology players to make available their basic functionalities to their competitors. In response, Apple will be allowing alternative media streaming services.

Thus, allowing consumers to decide which platform to stream their content on instead of being forced to use the Apple AirPlay option.

It is a part of a bigger picture. The regulators are forcing the big technology companies to offer more interoperability. If this happens, iPhone users will be able to cast their content directly to their Chromecast-enabled televisions and other smart devices.  This would bring three key benefits:

  • Seamless casting across mixed-device households

  • Wider compatibility with smart TVs and speakers

  • Reduced friction when switching between ecosystems

The experience would also become more consistent with Android devices, where Google Cast is already deeply integrated.

A Strategic Shift for Apple

AirPlay continues to play a vital role in this plan. Shifting towards Google Cast is likely to create a distinction within Apple’s ecosystem. While Apple might keep AirPlay as its premium offering, supporting Google Cast will offer customers more freedom.

This new feature may be rolled out initially in Europe, given the pressure from regulators, while the global rollout plan is yet to be confirmed by the tech giant.

Experts suggest that the integration of Google Cast on iPhones will change streaming habits. The update allows for greater flexibility in Apple devices, especially in non-Apple households.
