Apple is all set to bring the biggest changes to its Apple Silicon strategy. This time, the tech giant may skip the M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra chips altogether. Reports suggest Apple will launch only the standard M6 processor before shifting its focus to the next-generation M7 lineup, which is expected to deliver major AI improvements. The new plan would mark the first time Apple has abandoned the Pro and Max variants of an M-series generation.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, “Apple had been planning major neural-processing upgrades for the M7 family and decided those improvements were important enough to justify accelerating the next generation rather than completing the M6 line-up.”
The new strategy is attributed to Apple’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence. The firm is fast-tracking its next processor family to boost neural engine performance for AI capabilities instead of boosting the CPU and GPU performance.
The move comes as tech companies race to develop hardware capable of handling advanced on-device AI workloads. Apple appears to be positioning future Macs for more demanding AI applications instead of relying solely on annual performance gains.
Reports reveal that Apple will launch the base M6 chip this year, while the M7 model might be released in the first half of 2027. The M7 Pro and M7 Max variants could arrive later in 2027, while the M7 Ultra could follow in 2028.
The flagship M7 Ultra can come with great advancements in AI computing and storage capacity, which make it an appropriate choice for Apple's next-generation AI infrastructure and Mac machines.
This will change the buying equation for Mac users. Professionals planning to upgrade to a MacBook Pro or Mac Studio may not see an M6 Pro or M6 Max model at all. Instead, Apple could continue offering M5 Pro and M5 Max systems until the M7 family arrives.
