John Ternus steps in as Apple’s new chief executive. This marks the end of Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure and the start of a leadership phase driven by artificial intelligence. Ternus, Apple’s former senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, takes over as the company faces mounting pressure to catch up with AI rivals. However, Apple remains a major brand in smartphones.
Apple’s leadership transition took effect on September 1. Cook will be an executive chairman, continuing to support the company on selected matters, including engagement with policymakers.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and spent much of his career overseeing the development of major products. He became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and was elevated to senior vice president in 2021. His portfolio included products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods.
Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at investment firm Yorkville Ives & Co, said, “Tim Cook left the house in phenomenal order. But now it's about Ternus defining the AI chapter. Ives expects the new chief executive to lean into what he knows. There's no reason to fix what's already working.” He further predicted that Ternus will concentrate on hardware innovation while leaving Cook's supply chain intact.
Apple’s major strategic problem lies in generative AI. Competitors like OpenAI and Google have swiftly increased their AI capabilities. Apple also adopted a more cautious approach.
The company is all set to make its AI capabilities more visible and useful for its customers. Upgrading Siri is very important as the company is competing with more capable AI assistants. Ternus will therefore need to turn Apple’s hardware advantage into a meaningful AI differentiator. His engineering background could help the company integrate AI more deeply across devices, chips and operating systems.
