Mario has strengthened its position as the highest-grossing video game franchise of all time. According to compiled industry data, the long-running franchise continues to dominate both unit sales and total lifetime revenue. Mario is owned by Nintendo. The game continues to be on the top list of video games across multiple generations of gaming.

Mario On Top List

The Mario franchise has generated $53.85 billion USD in gross revenue.  Experts suggest that this happened after it rebranded its titles and included spin-offs. These include Mario Kart and Mario Party. The game also entered into cross-media adaptations.

As reported by the Guinness World Records, the Mario franchise is the best-selling gaming series. It has sold over 893.4M units as of June 10, 2025. However, this record does not include the account for Mario Kart World. The Mario franchise has surpassed renowned franchises in lifetime gross. Some of its competitors include the following:

  • Pokémon

  • Call of Duty (CoD)

  • Grand Theft Auto (GTA)

Mario Kart was released on Switch 2 in June 2025. Since then, the total Mario franchise copies across all titles have crossed 950M, according to the Super Mario Wiki. This is likely to be the highest sales ever recorded for any video game series.

Video Game Franchise Highlights

The compilation chart shows that Mario has a long-running franchise dominance. Mario leads in lifetime gross. Pokémon ranks second with $35.4B gross revenue. Then comes CoD, accounting for $35B gross in total.

The fourth and fifth places are taken by Pac-Man and Candy Crush Saga, respectively. Most of the video games on the list are older than a decade, running consistently for years. Some data highlight that the games made a comeback with the launch of new block-buster AAA games in recent years.

Other popular games, including Minecraft and FIFA ( rebranded as EA Sports FC), come under the top 20  list. Both of these games have recurring monetization models and a global player base.
