Meta recently released the Muse Image, which is the company’s first AI image generation model, developed at the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This marks an important move in its quest to build a strong foothold in the race for generative AI. The Muse Image Model is now part of the Meta AI suite and provides image creation, editing, and manipulation features for the company’s entire ecosystem.
Unlike traditional image generators, Muse Image operates alongside Muse Spark, which is a large language model owned by Meta. This model understands complex prompts, conducts online research where necessary, and even devises a plan before generating an image. Meta claims that such an agentic system, one that can plan multiple steps before generating an image, helps achieve higher accuracy and satisfaction.
Users can create images through text prompts, edit images, turn images into other styles, create composite images, and perform fine-grain editing through sketches and annotations. This model also allows users to redesign spaces with images found online.
One of Muse Image's biggest additions is its Instagram integration. Users can reference public Instagram profiles through @mentions to create AI-generated visuals inspired by publicly available images. Meta says users will continue to have control over how their public content is used for AI features.
The launch comes as Meta accelerates investments in AI infrastructure and talent to compete more aggressively with OpenAI and Google. Muse Image can be accessed via the Meta AI app. Meta also announced Muse Video, which generates video content based on prompts. This AI model is part of Meta's bigger vision that goes beyond image generation.
The company is also introducing more than 30 AI-powered creative effects for Instagram Stories. Muse Image will support image generation within Meta AI chats on WhatsApp in selected markets before expanding to Facebook and Messenger.
Thanks to web-enabled reasoning, editing capabilities, and social media functionality, Muse Image demonstrates Meta's latest efforts towards making AI creation smarter and more interactive.
