Microsoft is testing a redesigned Windows 11 search experience that removes ads, promotional content, and unnecessary recommendations from the search menu. The updated search box is currently available to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel as the company works on making search faster and less cluttered.

The new version focuses on showing users the information they need first. Microsoft has simplified the search homepage by replacing multiple content panels with a cleaner layout that mainly displays recent searches.

Gets a Simpler Interface

The current Windows 11 search menu includes several extra sections alongside recent searches. These include daily quizzes, trending searches, image features, game suggestions, and other recommended content. The redesigned search box removes these elements and creates a more focused interface.

Users will mainly see recently searched applications, files, and folders when opening the search menu. Microsoft is also changing how search results appear. The company says the updated system will show the most relevant answer first instead of placing related products and promotional results higher in the list.

Apps will Get Priority

The updated search experience will give more importance to results stored on the device. Applications, settings, and local files will appear ahead of web results and Microsoft Store recommendations when they match the search query. Microsoft has also added clearer information about search results.

The redesigned interface will show more details about where a result comes from, along with file previews in the right-side panel. This is expected to help users identify files and apps more quickly. Windows Insiders will also get a new option in settings that allows them to disable web and Microsoft Store recommendations completely.

Faster Search Experience

Microsoft is improving search reliability with better handling of typing mistakes, missing letters, extra characters, and incomplete words. The updated system can recognise searches with small errors and still provide relevant results. The company is also working on improving search rankings so useful settings appear higher in results.

File searches have received improvements as well, including better support for shorter file names and connected or cloud-based files. Microsoft says the update is being released gradually to Experimental channel testers. Not all Windows Insiders will receive the feature immediately as the company evaluates performance and feedback.

More Focused Windows Experience

The search changes reflect Microsoft's broader effort to make Windows 11 feel less crowded and more user-focused. Removing promotional content from a frequently used feature could improve everyday usability for many users.

The company has not announced when the redesigned search experience will reach all Windows 11 users. The final rollout will depend on feedback from testers and further improvements during the testing phase.
