

Microsoft has shared details of another round of layoffs, mostly affecting its gaming division. The tech giant is about to remove 4,800 jobs. While this has become a recurring pattern, the company has now announced a severance package for employees who were laid off. It has declared that eligible workers can receive up to 39 weeks of pay, along with healthcare benefits and career support after leaving the company.
The announcement comes as Microsoft continues to reduce jobs across different teams. At the same time, it is spending more on AI and cloud services. While the layoffs have raised concerns, the company says it wants to make the transition easier for those leaving.
Microsoft has laid off thousands of employees over the past few years as it reshapes parts of its business. With the latest round of job cuts, the company has also announced one of its strongest severance packages in recent years.
The eligible employees will receive a severance package of up to 39 weeks, which includes a minimum of 60 days of base pay. According to the announcement, employees at internal levels 64 and below will receive one week of base pay for every six months of service.
Similarly, those at levels 65 to 67 will receive two weeks of base pay for every six months worked. Finally, executives who are at level 68 and above will receive a separate package whose details are under wraps at the time of writing.
Along with this, Microsoft is also offering temporary healthcare coverage, career guidance, job search support, and immigration help for workers who need it.
The company says these benefits are meant to give employees time to plan their next step. While losing a job is difficult, additional support can help reduce some of the pressure of finding new work.
Even after cutting jobs, Microsoft remains one of the world's biggest technology companies. Its cloud business continues to perform well, and demand for AI services is growing. The company is investing billions of dollars in AI tools, data centers, and future products. To support these plans, it is reducing costs in other areas of the business. That is one reason the layoffs are happening.
At the same time, Microsoft has sufficient financial strength to offer better exit benefits than many other companies. A stronger severance package also helps protect its image and shows support for employees during a difficult period.
