

NASA delivered its compact NavCube3-mini navigation payload to commercial space company Intuitive Machines for integration into the Altus-1 lunar relay satellite. This supports NASA's plan to establish reliable navigation and communication services around the Moon for future Artemis missions. The payload will help demonstrate whether existing navigation signals from Earth can guide spacecraft operating in lunar orbit.
Although the payload weighs only about 1.6 kilograms and consumes less than 20 watts of power, NavCube3-mini features sophisticated technologies. Developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, it is capable of identifying and processing navigation information from both GPS and Galileo satellites orbiting our planet at a distance of the Moon.
The technology builds on years of research that has steadily extended the usable range of Earth-based navigation systems beyond traditional limits. NavCube3-mini will operate aboard Altus-1, Intuitive Machines' first lunar communications relay satellite, and is expected to become part of NASA's growing lunar communications architecture, supporting astronauts, robotic rovers, orbiters, cargo missions, and scientific payloads.
NASA subjected the payload to extensive vibration, thermal vacuum, electromagnetic compatibility, and navigation simulations to ensure it could withstand launch and deep-space conditions. A successful demonstration would provide valuable data for future lunar navigation systems and reduce operational complexity for upcoming Artemis missions.
NASA views NavCube3-mini as more than a technology demonstration. It will develop infrastructure to help humans explore and live on the Moon in the future. The need for compact navigation systems such as NavCube3-mini will increase as the activity on the Moon becomes more frequent in the coming years.
