OpenAI is recruiting Paul Meade, a vice president at Apple, who was responsible for hardware engineering for the company’s Vision Pro headset, in yet another important move towards developing its consumer hardware strategy. OpenAI is stepping up its game and trying to develop AI native hardware apart from developing large language models.
Paul Meade led hardware engineering for Vision Pro for seven years and was responsible for Apple’s smart glasses project as well. Paul Meade is expected to join the hardware team at OpenAI next week and will play an important role in the development of a new line of AI-powered devices.
This appointment is a part of OpenAI's continuing efforts in recruiting experienced executives from Apple. OpenAI has previously recruited some of Apple's top executives, including Jony Ive, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan, to build its next-gen AI hardware.
Such a move comes as a result of OpenAI's overall strategy in developing specialized hardware along with powerful AI systems rather than using smartphones and other available computing platforms.
OpenAI is expected to be developing an ecosystem that integrates hardware and AI services. While Apple keeps investing in the development of spatial computing and wearables, the departure of another of its key engineering executives from Apple to join OpenAI is significant.
Meade’s exit comes after internal changes in the leadership of the hardware department within Apple. According to reports, his trusted lieutenant, Fletcher Rothkopf, will take up several of his duties, most likely related to Vision Pro and the next smart glasses project from Apple.
This last hiring clearly demonstrates the way in which competition in AI technology is moving quickly away from software toward hardware. Businesses are putting their money behind hardware designed to facilitate the creation of more contextually aware computing experiences.
OpenAI has not yet announced any consumer-oriented hardware devices. Nevertheless, after the recent acquisition of io and the partnership with Jony Ive, there are high expectations for the creation of a new class of AI-first devices. Meade’s expertise in designing sophisticated consumer hardware should be of great use to fulfill these goals.
