OpenAI introduced GPT‑6.1 Terra, a new AI model built to interpret what appears on a screen and take action across applications. The company said the model combined visual reasoning, computer use and natural-language generation to handle time-consuming routine tasks.

Terra can draft proposals, interpret technical drawings, fill forms and edit videos. Its bigger promise lies in automating multi-step tasks, such as reading incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software.

Built for Computer Use

OpenAI said, “Terra can turn visual understanding into action. It can operate desktop applications, follow multi-step instructions and complete professional tasks without constant human input."

The company tested the model on Agents’ Last Exam, a benchmark covering tasks such as converting architectural drawings into 3D models and reviewing animated film footage for restoration teams. Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT‑5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort, while costing about one-third as much.

The model also completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT‑6 Astra and GPT‑6.1 Sol, according to OpenAI.

Pricing is central to the launch. OpenAI says Terra’s standard API prices are 50 percent lower than those of GPT‑5.6 Terra and GPT‑6.1 Sol, with input and output tokens priced separately. The model costs USD 1 per million input tokens and USD 5 per million output tokens.

Better Accuracy and Coding

OpenAI also focused on reducing factual errors. On its internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the error rate fell from 53.6 percent for GPT‑5.6 Terra to 16.7 percent for Terra at low reasoning effort. At maximum effort, the rate dropped to 4.3 percent.

The model also shows stronger coding performance. On Terminal‑Bench 4.0, Terra solved 50.3 percent of tasks at maximum reasoning effort, more than double the 21.5 percent score published for GPT‑5.6. The launch signals OpenAI’s push to move AI beyond answering questions. With Terra, the company wants models to complete work inside the software people already use.
