Pebble OS to Add Plugins, Turning Watchfaces into Data-Rich Dashboards

Pebble OS will soon support JavaScript plugins that run on smartphones. The update will let watchfaces and apps share weather, calendar, finance, smart-home and other data without hardcoding APIs.

Pebble is preparing one of the most significant changes to its smartwatch platform in years. Founder Eric Migicovsky has announced plugin support for Pebble OS, describing it as the biggest update to the company’s software development kit in a long time.

The new system will let developers create small, reusable components that supply data or perform actions. A watchface could display weather, stock prices, calendar events or traffic updates. An app could control music playback, manage smart-home devices or send webhooks.

How the Plugins Will Work

Pebble plugins will be written in JavaScript and run inside the Pebble mobile app on a user’s smartphone. They will not execute on the watch itself. This design should protect battery life, since the watch will only receive the processed information it needs.

Plugins will work in two ways. Sources will provide data that any compatible watchface or app can read. Actions will let apps trigger functions, such as unlocking a door, adding a task or controlling connected devices.

Migicovsky compared the concept to Apple Watch complications, but said Pebble’s version would be more flexible. Developers will no longer need to build separate weather, finance or calendar integrations into every watchface.

A Shared Data Layer

The change could reshape how Pebble developers build software. Today, a developer creating a weather watchface must handle APIs, keys and update logic. Under the plugin model, the developer can rely on a shared weather source instead.

That approach should reduce duplicated work and make it easier for small developers to create polished experiences. It may also encourage a broader ecosystem of data providers, from transit services to productivity tools.

The feature is currently in developer preview. Pebble has enabled it through experimental settings in the latest mobile app and is inviting developers to test the tools, build plugins and share feedback. The company has not announced a public release date.
