Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a new, lower-priced PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in a Midnight Black finish for Japan. The console will launch on November 19, 2026, at a recommended retail price of 55,000 yen, including tax. Pre-orders will begin on October 20 through participating PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan.
The new console gives Japanese buyers another option in Sony’s PS5 lineup. Its Midnight Black exterior matches the company’s existing range of black PlayStation accessories, including the PlayStation Portal remote player.
Sony has priced the console at 55,000 yen, with sales scheduled to begin on November 19. The company will also launch a matching Midnight Black disc drive on the same date for 11,980 yen, including tax. Buyers who want to play physical game discs will need to purchase the accessory separately.
The console comes with a DualSense wireless controller and an 825GB solid-state drive. Sony has also retained the core PS5 features, including fast storage, 3D audio, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The system supports compatible PlayStation 4 games as well.
The biggest limitation is the console’s regional restriction. Sony says users must set the system language to Japanese and use a PlayStation Network account registered to Japan. These requirements could make the model unsuitable for international buyers, even if they purchase it through a third-party seller.
The launch comes as Sony continues to offer region-specific console options to Japanese consumers. By retaining the PS5’s core hardware capabilities while introducing a different colour and a market-specific configuration, the company is expanding its local lineup without announcing a new generation of hardware.
For now, the Midnight Black Digital Edition remains exclusive to Japan. Sony has not confirmed whether it will introduce the same model in India, the US or other international markets. Gamers in those regions will need to rely on the existing PS5 lineup unless the company announces broader availability.
