PlayStation is preparing to introduce the UAE dirham as the official currency for PlayStation Store transactions in the UAE, replacing the US dollar. The change will allow users to see game prices, charges, and receipts directly in dirhams instead of converting from dollars.

Sony announced that the currency transition will take place during a scheduled maintenance window from October 5 to October 8, 2026. According to the company, UAE customers will not need to make any changes to their accounts for the switch. The move is part of a wider rollout of local currencies across selected markets in the Middle East and Latin America.

Payments to Stop During Maintenance

During the maintenance period, the UAE PlayStation Store will temporarily be taken offline. Users will not be able to make purchases or add funds to their PlayStation Wallet while the update is underway.

This means credit cards, debit cards, and other available payment options will be unavailable through the store during the scheduled downtime. Sony advised users to consider the temporary interruption and avoid purchasing games, add-ons, or other digital content around those dates. Once the maintenance is complete, purchases will resume, and prices and charges will be displayed in UAE dirhams.

Existing US-dollar PlayStation gift cards will remain valid. Sony says redeemed cards will be converted into the local currency after the transition.

Existing Subscriptions Will Continue

The currency change is not expected to interrupt active subscriptions. According to Sony, subscriptions whose payment dates fall during the maintenance window will continue running, and payment will be processed after the update is completed.

However, users could see a small difference in recurring subscription costs after prices move from dollars to dirhams. The company also said PlayStation Stars points will be adjusted to reflect the currency conversion.

For wallet balances, Sony has specified a conversion rate of $1 = AED 4.00 for the UAE transition. The company will apply the conversion during maintenance and round balances according to the supported local currency format.

PS3 Digital Purchases To End

The update also brings a separate change for older PlayStation hardware. After the currency transition, users in the UAE will no longer be able to make new purchases through the PlayStation Store on PS3 consoles.

Sony has not indicated whether previously purchased PS3 content will be removed. For UAE gamers, the immediate impact is therefore limited to the October maintenance window. After the update, the PlayStation Store will operate with dirham pricing, eliminating the need to calculate costs in US dollars before making digital purchases.
