Qualcomm is reportedly in discussions to acquire AI chip startup Tenstorrent. The deal is expected to be valued at between $8 billion and $10 billion. Negotiations are currently ongoing, and no final agreement has been reached. The deal value could change, and discussions may still fail to result in a transaction.

If completed, the acquisition could be one of the largest AI semiconductor deals in recent years. It could also strengthen Qualcomm’s push beyond its traditional smartphone-chip business.

Qualcomm Eyes Major AI Expansion with Tenstorrent Acquisition

According to reports, Qualcomm offered highly favorable terms for the acquisition, with the expected purchase price in the $8 billion to $10 billion range. This represents a significant premium—several times higher—than Tenstorrent’s valuation of approximately $2.6 billion during its D-round financing at the end of last year.”

Qualcomm has been aggressively expanding into AI, data centers, edge computing, PCs, and automotive technologies to diversify its focus away from the cyclical smartphone business. The acquisition of Tenstorrent will give Qualcomm access to advanced AI chip technology, expertise, and intellectual property that could help it compete more effectively in the fast-growing AI infrastructure industry.

Experts suggest that this initiative can help Qualcomm position itself in AI computing, especially in data centers, which are currently dominated by firms like NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices.

Tenstorrent’s Growing Influence in AI Hardware

Tenstorrent has attracted significant attention from investors and industry players. This is largely due to its innovative work in developing efficient AI processing chips. Previously, both Qualcomm and Intel expressed interest in the startup amid growing competition in AI processor development.

Qualcomm is reportedly planning to acquire Tenstorrent as part of its strategy to bolster AI technologies. Recently, Qualcomm reached an agreement to acquire Alphawave, a semiconductor firm, for almost $2.4 billion in 2025, which should allow it to expand into AI and data centers.

Qualcomm's acquisition of Tenstorrent would greatly advance its AI technology development goals.  Thus, the strategic shift makes it a stronger contender in the rapidly growing chip manufacturing business. Both Qualcomm and Tenstorrent have refused to comment on the potential deal.
