OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has criticized rival AI company Anthropic. He reacted after its recent video on the challenges and future of artificial intelligence. The exchange has added another chapter to the public disagreement between the two AI firms. Anthropic recently shared a video featuring people discussing their hopes and concerns about AI.

The video focused on questions around AI’s impact on society and carried the message, ‘There’s hope in hard questions.’ Altman responded to the post on X with a sarcastic remark. He said he initially thought the video was satire and questioned the message behind Anthropic’s campaign.

Altman Questions Anthropic’s Approach to AI Access

Altman also raised concerns about Anthropic’s policies around its AI services. He argued that difficult conversations around AI should include discussions about how companies treat users. ‘Hard questions are great but only if we deem you worthy enough to not silently downgrade you, or even get access at all,’ Altman wrote in his post.

The comment appeared to target Anthropic’s handling of user access and service availability. Anthropic has positioned its Claude AI platform around safety-focused development and controlled AI deployment. The latest criticism shows the growing competition between OpenAI and Anthropic as both companies compete for users, businesses, and influence in the AI industry.

Earlier Clash Over ChatGPT Ads and Claude Promotion

The two companies have also disagreed publicly over advertising in AI products. OpenAI announced plans earlier this year to introduce ads on ChatGPT. Soon after, Anthropic released a commercial that questioned the idea of placing ads inside AI chatbots. One of the ads began with the word ‘BETRAYAL’ and showed a chatbot appearing to promote a fictional dating website during a conversation.

The advertisement suggested that Claude would not include ads, while highlighting concerns over how advertising could affect AI responses. Altman later criticized Anthropic’s campaign and called it misleading. He stated that the commercial created an inaccurate impression of how ads would work on ChatGPT.

AI Rivalry Moves Beyond Technology Race

The public exchanges between OpenAI and Anthropic show a wider debate over the future direction of AI services. The companies are competing not only on technology, but also on questions around user experience, safety, and business models. Altman has previously accused Anthropic of focusing on a more expensive product model and limiting access for some users.

Anthropic has continued to promote Claude as an AI service built around careful development and responsible use. As AI companies expand their products, disagreements over access, advertising, and control are likely to become a bigger part of the industry conversation.
