Stripe finalized an agreement to acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. According to Bloomberg, Stripe has not publicly confirmed the transaction and declined to comment on rumours or speculation.
The deal would give Stripe a major position in the infrastructure layer connecting businesses and developers with multiple artificial intelligence models. It also highlights the growing strategic value of AI gateways as companies increasingly use several models instead of relying on a single provider.
OpenRouter works as an AI Model Gateway where people can use hundreds of AI models through a common interface. It enables users to choose among different AI models, considering aspects like performance, availability, and cost.
According to the startup, it has about 8 million users who can use more than 400 AI models. Thus, developers will be able to easily switch to another model without altering their application architecture.
For Stripe, the acquisition could extend its role from processing financial transactions to supporting the wider economic infrastructure behind AI applications. The company raised $113 million in a Series B funding round in May 2026, with its valuation reported at around $1.3 billion.
The acquisition comes as Stripe broadens its focus beyond traditional payments infrastructure. AI firms require solutions that help them manage model routing, usage, billing, and payments in their complicated technology stack.
An acquisition of OpenRouter could enhance Stripe's position in this newly evolving ecosystem. OpenRouter's model routing technology could be complementary to Stripe's payment infrastructure and other business models of Stripe.
This acquisition is also indicative of a broader trend in terms of value creation in AI. With firms gaining access to more varied models, the role of infrastructure linking these models becomes crucial. However, the transaction remains a reported agreement rather than a publicly confirmed acquisition.
