Artificial intelligence is changing workplaces, but experts say employees who learn to use AI without surrendering their judgment could remain valuable as automation expands. The key is not simply knowing how to operate AI tools. Workers also need domain expertise, critical thinking, and the ability to assess machine-generated results.
Alexandre Depret-Bixio, SVP International at Anomali, said, “Dependence on technology is hardly new, with calculators, spellcheck and GPS having raised similar questions about how much people should hand over to a tool.AI makes that temptation considerably easier because it can now complete larger portions of a task.”
AI can handle repetitive tasks, organise information, prepare first drafts, conduct routine research and identify patterns. These capabilities can save employees time and improve productivity.
AI fluency involves understanding what AI can do, recognizing its limitations, giving effective instructions and validating its output. Critical thinking also becomes more important as AI makes generating answers easier. Arturo Buzzalino, Chief Product Officer and Chief Innovation Officer at Epicor, said, “The ability to ask the right questions will become increasingly valuable.”
Looking ahead, communication, creativity, adaptability, leadership, and empathy will also remain important as workplaces automate routine activities.
