WhatsApp is reportedly developing a feature called “guest calls” that would let people join voice or video calls without downloading the app or creating an account.
The update builds on the existing call-link system and is currently under development, with no official release date announced. Hosts would share a link, guests would open it in a browser, and the host would approve each request before the call begins.
WhatsApp’s new feature will have the current call-link setup. A user can generate a link from the Calls tab, pick the call type, and send it to others. People without WhatsApp accounts could tap the link and enter the call through WhatsApp Web. They would not need to install anything or sign up.
Guests would not enter automatically. The host must approve each person before they join. This step adds a layer of control in WhatsApp, especially if the link spreads beyond the intended group. Hosts can also remove participants or end the call for everyone at any time.
Security remains a priority, as reports suggest guest calls will keep WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. When a guest opens the link, WhatsApp Web creates a unique identifier for that browser session. This identifier helps generate the encryption key needed to protect the call. No account is required to establish this secure connection.
Guest calls differ from guest chats in one key way. Guest chats allow messages to continue over time. Calls are live and end once the conversation wraps up.
This update could make WhatsApp calls more accessible, especially for people who avoid installing apps or lack storage space. It also helps in quick group settings—think family catch-ups, emergency check-ins, or informal work huddles—where not everyone uses WhatsApp regularly.
The feature is still in development. Functionality could change before launch, and WhatsApp has not shared a timeline. If rolled out as described, it would place WhatsApp alongside other platforms that allow browser-based calling without mandatory sign-ups.
For now, users should wait for official word from WhatsApp or Meta. Until then, the call-link feature remains limited to account holders.
