WhatsApp has released a new feature which lets users top up their mobile phone accounts through the app. The platform establishes its second phase of deployment for both Android and iOS systems because it aims to decrease its dependence on external recharge applications.
The move strengthens WhatsApp's push into digital payments because the company has expanded its services beyond messaging to keep users engaged within its ecosystem.
The feature works with leading telecom providers such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, covering most prepaid users across the country.
Users can pay through UPI, debit cards, or credit cards. WhatsApp has partnered with PayU to process transactions in the background. The recharge option appears under the Rs button on the app’s home screen, alongside existing services such as bill payments and metro ticket bookings.
Users need to access the Payments section to choose ‘Recharge Mobile’ for their recharging needs. They need to enter their mobile number and operator details before selecting a plan and making their payment.
The confirmation screen from WhatsApp displays plan details after the transaction finishes while the details are also stored in the payment history. The company has made it clear that customers cannot cancel or reverse successful recharges.
The company will issue refunds for transactions that failed during the upcoming business days. Users who experience delays can contact PayU's customer support. WhatsApp shows its intention to develop into an all-in-one platform for Indian users by adding this feature.
