Xbox has confirmed that more exclusive games are in development. It is showing continued focus on powering its console and PC ecosystem. The company stated that the upcoming titles, such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, will not be the only games reserved for Xbox and PC.
The announcement comes after months of uncertainty among fans over Microsoft's approach to first-party releases. Several Xbox-owned games have expanded to other platforms, which is creating questions about whether the company was moving away from traditional exclusives.
Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, during a conversation with GamesRadar, said, “More Xbox exclusives are on the way. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are not the only titles; Xbox plans to keep exclusive.”
However, Xbox is not returning to a strategy where every first-party game stays locked to its platforms. Booty noted that the release decisions will be made separately for each title. Some games may continue to launch on Xbox and PC only, while others could arrive on additional platforms. The company also plans to keep major live service games available across multiple platforms to benefit from reaching a larger community of players.
The company recently announced around 3,200 job cuts and restructuring across its gaming operations. The changes also involved shifts for several game studios.
Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions are set to return to independent ownership. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will move under new ownership, while Microsoft stated that funding will continue for projects linked to the Senua franchise and State of Decay 3. The future of Arkane is still being reviewed.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed that the restructuring was needed as the company's existing business model faced pressure from rising costs, a smaller console user base, and the challenge of managing a large group of studios.
Despite the changes, Microsoft has said that previously announced first-party games are still in development and still on schedule. The company has not yet revealed which upcoming titles will receive exclusive status next.
