Introduced in 1996, the Motorola StarTAC became one of the most influential early clamshell phones. Classic flip phones relied on physical buttons for calling, messaging and navigating menus. Their tactile keypads gave users clear feedback with every press, while the folding design helped protect the screen and buttons. Modern smartphones offer far more functionality, yet the simplicity and familiar feel of older phones continue to attract nostalgic interest.

How Flip Phones Influenced Modern Foldables

The original flip phone design helped establish the idea that a handset could become smaller when folded and open when needed. Today's foldable smartphones build on that principle with flexible displays, cameras and advanced software. Their technology is very different, yet the appeal of combining portability with a larger screen echoes the earlier clamshell era.
