The Mobile CPU Reaches 5GHz for the First Time: The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 uses Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU with two prime cores capable of reaching 5GHz. Qualcomm says this makes it the first mobile CPU to reach that clock speed. The company claims a 13% improvement in CPU performance over the previous generation. The platform is designed to handle demanding multitasking, on-device AI workloads and high-performance mobile applications while maintaining improved efficiency.

AI Performance Gets a Major Upgrade: The new chip is designed around Qualcomm’s push toward agentic AI on smartphones. Its reengineered Hexagon NPU delivers up to 35% faster AI performance, according to Qualcomm. The platform can also run sophisticated Mixture-of-Experts models with more than 30 billion parameters directly on the device. Qualcomm says this allows AI experiences to process more information locally, helping smartphones deliver faster responses while keeping more personal data on the device.

Adreno Neural Fusion Targets AI-Powered Gaming: Gaming gets a new AI-focused graphics system called Adreno Neural Fusion. Qualcomm combines AI-powered super resolution, frame generation and advanced image reconstruction through dedicated Adreno matrix cores. The system is designed to improve visual quality while reducing the workload placed on the GPU. Qualcomm says the technology can help deliver console-quality graphics with better power efficiency. It also supports integrations with major game engines, including Unity and Unreal Engine.

Smartphones Can Record 8K Video at 60fps: The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 expands mobile video capabilities with support for 8K recording at 60fps and 4K recording at 240fps. The platform also supports Qualcomm’s Advanced Professional Video codec for professional-style video workflows. Its camera system includes the Elite Color Engine and Intelligent Pixel Control, which use AI to improve colour, scene understanding and image quality. Qualcomm also lists support for three 64MP cameras simultaneously.

Wi-Fi 8 and Faster 5G Expand Connectivity: Qualcomm has paired the new processor with its X105 5G Modem-RF System and FastConnect 8800 connectivity platform. The chip supports peak 5G download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps and upload speeds of up to 4.2Gbps under Qualcomm’s specified conditions. It also supports Wi-Fi 8, with peak Wi-Fi speeds listed at up to 11.6Gbps. The platform additionally supports 5G Advanced and satellite-ready NTN connectivity

The First Phones Are Already Taking Shape: Qualcomm says smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 will come from brands including HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi. Motorola has already introduced its Signature 27 with the new Extreme chip, making it one of the first smartphones to showcase Qualcomm’s latest flagship platform. More premium Android devices are expected to join the lineup as manufacturers launch their next-generation models.
