The UAE has made AI education a major part of its school system. The country no longer treats artificial intelligence as a subject only for computer science students. Instead, the national approach aims to give children basic AI knowledge from an early age and then build stronger technical, creative and ethical skills through later school years. This approach supports the UAE’s wider goal of creating a workforce that can work with advanced technology and adapt to new jobs.
The biggest step came with the 2025–26 academic year. The UAE introduced AI as a formal subject across public schools from kindergarten to Grade 12. Around 1,000 teachers will deliver the programme, which covers nearly one million students across the public school system.
The curriculum covers basic AI ideas, data, algorithms, software, ethics, real-world uses, innovation and policy. Younger children receive simple lessons, while older students move toward more advanced ideas. The structure gives students a gradual path from basic awareness to practical AI skills.
The UAE also places strong value on responsible AI use. Students learn that AI tools can make mistakes, show bias and produce poor answers. This part of the curriculum can help children treat AI as a tool that needs human judgment rather than as a source of automatic truth.
The UAE has also focused on teachers. In May 2026, the Ministry of Education and Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University launched the National AI Upskilling Programme for Teachers. The programme helps teachers use AI tools in daily school work in a practical and ethical way. It also covers new methods for lesson plans, assessment and student interaction.
This step matters as much as the student curriculum. A strong AI programme needs teachers who can explain AI clearly, check AI results and guide safe use inside classrooms. Teacher skills can also help schools avoid a simple ‘AI tool’ approach and instead use technology as part of better education.
Dubai has added another major programme for private schools. In February 2026, the DP World Foundation, KHDA and MIT RAISE launched a multi-year AI literacy programme. The project aims to reach about 80,500 students and support around 3,600 teachers by February 2030.
The programme focuses on students in Grades 6–8 and places AI lessons inside subjects such as mathematics, science, computing, art, English and Arabic. This model shows a wider idea about future skills: AI should not stay inside a computer lab. A student may need AI skills in almost every future career.
School education forms only one part of the UAE plan. At the university level, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) provides specialised AI education. Its undergraduate programme combines AI and computer science with mathematics, business, leadership and communication. Students also get an industry placement as part of the four-year structure.
MBZUAI reports 25+ nationalities, 37.5% female students, 100% scholarship coverage, a 5:1 instructor-to-student ratio and an admission rate below 5% for its undergraduate programme. These figures show the UAE’s focus on both international talent and highly selective AI education.

The current school reforms connect with the UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031, which dates back to 2017. The strategy calls for talent development and wider AI use across major sectors. The education system now gives that goal a much larger base.
The UAE’s approach therefore covers the full path from school to work. Young children gain AI awareness, teenagers develop practical and ethical skills, and university students can pursue advanced AI careers. At the same time, teachers gain new skills to support the change.
The real test will come from results over the next few years. AI education needs more than tool use. Students need strong judgment, creativity, problem-solving skills and a clear sense of responsibility. The UAE has built the structure for that goal. The next stage will show whether this large national effort can produce a generation that can not only use AI, but also question it, improve it and create useful solutions with it.
