Apple has released a comprehensive upgrade to the child protection and parental control features. The tech giant is introducing features that provide parents with improved supervision over internet usage and interaction. The update will be introduced in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 sometime later this year.
Apple has made changes to the child account that allow parents to set up their devices more easily during initial configuration. As a result, parents can choose the applications kids are allowed to use in the future instead of leaving broad access rights by default.
Another function called Ask to Browse prompts kids to ask permission when browsing the web through the Safari browser. This function utilizes Ask to Buy technology that was previously used for downloading and purchasing applications.
Apple is extending parental controls across Messages, FaceTime, and phone calls. Parents will now be able to approve new contacts before children can communicate with them.
The Communication Safety feature, already used to detect sensitive images in messages, will also detect and block violent or graphic content in photos and videos. Apple confirmed the system is designed to protect privacy through on-device processing wherever possible.
The company has redesigned Screen Time to give parents a clearer view of device usage, including app activity and time spent across categories. A new tool called Time Allowances provides limits across groups such as gaming, entertainment, and social media instead of individual apps.
Parents will also be able to set schedules that restrict access during specific periods, such as school hours or family time. The system can also temporarily extend access when required.
Apple stated the update was developed with guidance from child development and medical experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics. The company is also introducing developer tools to help apps offer age-appropriate experiences and manage sensitive interactions within services.
Tools such as Sensitive Content Analysis, Permission Kit, and the Declared Age Range API will allow developers to adjust content based on a child’s age while maintaining privacy safeguards.
Apple is trying to address the growing concerns about children’s increasing screen time, online interaction, and digital safety measures. The company’s most recent update focuses more on parental control systems without sacrificing content and communication tracking capabilities.
