Apple Changed iPhone 18 Pro Texture and Grain Support Wording for New Camera Controls in iOS 27

Apple changed the compatibility wording for its new Texture and Grain controls in iOS 27. The controls were introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The updated Apple Newsroom page now specifically names the iPhone 18 Pro models. It also lists the Ultra Wide, Main and Center Stage cameras on the iPhone Duo. The earlier wording referred to iPhone models supporting the latest generation of Photographic Styles. That description appeared broader and could have suggested support on some older iPhones.

Apple’s iOS 27 User Guide lists the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro among devices supporting the latest generation of Photographic Styles. However, support for Photographic Styles does not automatically mean access to every new feature. Apple’s current wording states: “The new texture and grain controls will be available for photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on iPhone Duo.”

What the Texture and Grain Controls Do

The Texture and Grain controls are part of the updated Photographic Styles feature. They give users more control over the appearance of photos while capturing them. On the iPhone 18 Pro, users can select texture options such as Soft Skin, Glow, and Film. They can also adjust the intensity of these effects. Grain can be added to create a more film-like appearance. The iPhone 18 Pro models also feature an upgraded 48MP Fusion Main camera and a redesigned computational imaging pipeline. Apple says the camera system is designed to deliver sharper and more detailed images.

Apple did not explain why it changed the compatibility wording. The company did not publicly clarify whether the earlier description was an error or reflected an earlier compatibility plan. The updated wording gives users a more specific indication of where the new controls are supported. It also separates support for Photographic Styles from support for the latest Texture and Grain controls.
