Apple cancelled two MacBook models that were in development, according to display research firm Omdia. The projects included a large foldable MacBook and a separate larger OLED MacBook.

The development marks a shift in Apple’s long-term notebook strategy. However, the tech giant’s aim to introduce OLED displays across its MacBook range reportedly remains intact.

Foldable MacBook Project Scrapped

The most notable cancellation involves a large foldable MacBook. Omdia further explained, “Apple stopped development of a device with a display measuring between 16.1 inches and 18 inches when fully unfolded.”

The project had been rumoured for several years and was previously associated with a large foldable iPad or MacBook-iPad hybrid. Earlier reports suggested a launch around 2026. However, the timeline later slipped towards 2028 before the project was reportedly abandoned.

The reported decision would end one of Apple’s more ambitious experiments with flexible displays before the product reaches consumers. Apple also cancelled a separate OLED MacBook measuring between 14.4 inches and 16.1 inches.

MacBook Pro Set for OLED Transition

As reported by Omdia, “Apple is also expected to introduce OLED MacBook Pro models in 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch sizes. These could arrive in late 2026 or early 2027. The current mini-LED MacBook Pro models could remain on sale alongside the newer OLED versions for several years, potentially extending through at least 2028.

The machine was expected to occupy a new premium position between existing MacBook Pro models and the much larger foldable device. Its cancellation means Apple’s 14.3-inch to 16.3-inch premium notebook segment is likely to remain focused on the MacBook Pro range.
