Apple is all set for a major shift in its artificial intelligence strategy with the upcoming iOS 27. The tech giant is expected to allow users to select third-party AI models across system features.

This move showcases an expansion of Apple’s traditional private ecosystem. Instead of relying solely on its in-house AI stack, Apple may allow multiple AI providers to integrate with its ecosystem.

Apple Eyes Open AI Ecosystem

Apple is said to build this as an ‘Extensions’ framework inside system settings. Users could switch between models much like default apps today. Now users can select their preferred AI model for specific tasks. The tasks include:

  • Writing

  • Summarizing

  • Coding

  • Image generation

Currently, OpenAI powers limited integrations like ChatGPT on Apple devices. This will soon change. Apple is also testing options from Google and Anthropic. The iOS ecosystem could receive models from Gemini and Claude, backing this ambitious development.

Apple’s New Strategy Ahead

This shift may also reshape Siri. The AI assistant will gain access to various AI models it can use for different tasks. The system may achieve better results across all applications. Different AI systems perform better in different tasks because one AI excels at writing while another excels at coding and reasoning.

Apple has maintained a cautious stance toward generative artificial intelligence throughout its history. Microsoft and Google have outpaced Apple by implementing deep system integrations more quickly. Third-party AI access on iOS may enable Apple to maintain its market position without relying on a single technology solution.

The system also provides developers with increased options. Users may gain more control over how their devices work. Users can select AI tools according to their specific requirements.
