GEMS Education has unveiled GR8 School, a new UAE education model that combines AI-powered personalised learning with teacher mentoring and real-world experiences. The first school is expected to soft launch in January 2027 as a ‘school within a school’ at an existing GEMS campus.
The model is designed to let students progress through core academic content at their own pace. AI systems will track individual progress and identify areas where students need additional support.
GEMS said the technology will support teachers rather than replace them. Teachers will work as ‘Human Mentors’ and use learning data to provide more focused support to individual students.
The GR8 model will divide learning time between self-paced academic work, teacher-led sessions and enrichment activities. Students are expected to receive around 90 minutes to two hours of teacher-led learning each day.
A further two to three hours could focus on projects, sport, arts, creativity, collaboration and specialist learning. The approach is aimed at students who can take better responsibility for their education.
Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, said the model was developed in response to changes in technology and the workplace.
“GR8 is our answer to that question. It starts with the individual child and asks what combination of technology, great teachers, industry experts and real-industry experiences will help that young person achieve academically and discover what they could become.”
Varkey also stressed that the model will not suit every student. “GR8 is not for everyone, nor is it intended to be. No single model of education is right for every child.”
GR8 School will bring industry specialists and practitioners into the learning experience. Students will also develop skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, financial literacy and practical life skills. GEMS plans to create a wider GR8 Learning Collective involving teachers, specialists and industry experts. The network is intended to support pathways towards higher education, entrepreneurship and employment.
Indicative annual fees are expected to range from around USD 8,000-10,000 for affordable offerings to USD 20,000-40,000 for premium offerings. Final fees will vary by school and market. The first GR8 School will soft launch in January 2027. GEMS will continue testing its learning technology, academic model, teacher roles and specialist network before the launch.
