Elon Musk has hit back at OpenAI after the company announced plans to end its Cursor partnership on August 28, 2026. OpenAI will stop supplying models to Cursor by November 12, citing concerns over SpaceX’s contract compliance. The decision follows SpaceX’s USD 60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor.

Musk responded on X on August 29, dismissing the move while targeting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman. “I couldn’t care less,” Musk wrote before calling both executives “utterly untrustworthy.” He also repeated his claim that OpenAI abandoned its original nonprofit mission.

OpenAI said the contract included a change of control clause after Cursor changed ownership. The company said past disputes involving Musk’s businesses raised concerns about future compliance. OpenAI specifically cited contract issues involving X and alleged violations of terms involving xAI. 

OpenAI also said the cancellation decision came after nearly four years of working with Cursor. The company plans to maintain current model access through the proposed November deadline. Future models, including Astra, will not reach Cursor under the agreement. 

Cursor co-founder Michael Truell said OpenAI models currently account for about 5% of Cursor traffic. Truell added that Cursor remains in talks with OpenAI to resolve the dispute. He also described OpenAI as an early and trusted technology partner. 

The dispute adds another flashpoint to Musk’s long-running battle with Altman. Musk previously sued OpenAI over its shift away from its original nonprofit structure. Meanwhile, Anthropic plans to increase compute support for Claude models on Cursor.
