UAE travelers planning visa-free trips to Europe will not need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in 2026. The European Union has dropped its earlier target to launch the system this year.
The EU has not announced a new start date. Its official ETIAS information says the system is not operational and that a launch date will be announced several months before it begins.
The delay means there is no new travel step for eligible UAE travelers at present. Visa-exempt passengers can continue traveling to participating European countries under the current entry rules.
Travelers who need a Schengen visa must continue to follow the existing visa process. ETIAS will not replace the Schengen visa system. The requirement will depend on nationality rather than UAE residency. UAE citizens who currently enjoy visa-free short stays in the Schengen area will generally need ETIAS once the system becomes mandatory.
UAE residents with other passports may also need the authorization if their nationality qualifies for visa-free travel. Passport holders who already require a Schengen visa will continue using the visa system.
Travelers with upcoming European holidays or business trips do not need to alter their plans for ETIAS. Those eligible for visa-free entry can continue using the existing arrangements. Travelers should also avoid paying websites claiming to provide an ETIAS authorization now. The EU says applications are not being accepted while the system is inactive.
ETIAS should not be confused with the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES). EES is designed to electronically record entry and exit information for certain non-EU travelers making short stays.
ETIAS serves a different purpose. It will require eligible visa-exempt travelers to obtain travel authorization before departure.
ETIAS is planned as an online travel authorization for eligible visa-exempt travelers visiting 30 participating European countries. The list includes popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands.
The planned application fee is €20. An approved authorization is expected to be valid for up to three years, or until the passport used for the application expires. Travelers will be able to use the authorization for multiple visits during its validity.
Existing short-stay rules will still apply, including the general limit of 90 days within 180 days. A new passport will require a new ETIAS application since the authorization will be linked electronically to the travel document.
For UAE travelers, the key development to watch is the EU’s announcement of a firm ETIAS launch date. Until then, existing Schengen visa and visa-free travel rules continue to apply.
