Samsung took a different approach with the Galaxy Z Fold8. Instead of making another incremental upgrade to its book-style foldable, the company changed the device’s proportions. The result is a wider, more conventional-looking smartphone when closed and a more practical display when opened.
The timing is significant. Apple is reportedly preparing its first foldable iPhone for a September launch, putting Samsung’s latest Fold directly in the path of its biggest smartphone rival.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 comes with a cover display of 5.5 inches and an inner display of 7.6 inches with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This larger screen is more suited for video watching as well as multitasking.
The design changes also make the phone more comfortable to use compared to other Galaxy Fold smartphones. The wider screen was praised as the best feature of the smartphone.
The company also made some changes in the hinge and the display design, making the middle crease less visible. The Galaxy Z Fold8 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and comes with 12GB or 16GB of RAM, depending on the configuration. It uses a 4,800mAh battery and supports fast wired and wireless charging.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 therefore arrives at an important moment for foldables. Its wider design shows Samsung is willing to rethink a form factor it has developed for years. Apple’s entry could now test whether that approach is the direction consumers actually want.
For Samsung, the Fold8 is more than another annual upgrade. It is a statement about how foldables should evolve before Apple gets its first major opportunity to reshape the category.
