Google brings Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto, extending its AI assistant beyond smartphones and into the car. The update aims to make voice interactions more useful by allowing Gemini to understand personal context from a user’s connected Google services.
The feature will be available globally starting Wednesday. However, users in Switzerland, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria will not receive it initially.
Personal Intelligence enables Gemini to draw information from linked Google applications, including Gmail. This means drivers can ask direct questions about travel plans without opening emails or switching between apps.
For instance, a user heading to the airport can ask Gemini for the flight gate or check whether the flight is running on time. The assistant can pull the relevant details from a confirmation email and respond through the car’s interface.
The update also improves navigation. Instead of typing or dictating a full address, users can ask Gemini to navigate to a destination. Gemini can identify the location from calendar or email context and start directions.
Google said the assistant can offer more relevant suggestions while driving. When users ask for restaurant recommendations, Gemini can consider personal preferences and dietary restrictions, such as vegetarian preferences, alongside the planned route.
This shifts Android Auto from a basic voice-command system to a context-aware assistant. The company expects the feature to reduce distraction by allowing drivers to complete routine tasks through natural conversation.
The rollout reflects its broader push to make Gemini a central layer across its products. By bringing the assistant into vehicles, Google is competing more directly with other AI-powered in-car experiences and strengthening Android Auto’s role as a daily driving companion. The feature was first introduced earlier this year and later expanded to free Google accounts in March.
