OpenAI’s advertising business reached a major milestone, with ChatGPT Ads hitting a USD 1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days. The figure marks a significant shift for the company as advertising becomes an increasingly important part of its business model.
The milestone does not mean OpenAI has already earned USD 1 billion from advertising. An annualized run rate is a projection based on the current revenue pace. The speed at which the business has grown highlights the commercial potential of ChatGPT as a new destination for advertisers.
OpenAI began testing advertisements inside ChatGPT in the US earlier this year. The initial program quickly gained traction, with the company reporting that its advertising business had crossed a USD 100 million annualized run rate within weeks of launch.
The advertising operation expanded significantly by August. OpenAI said tens of thousands of advertisers were using ChatGPT Ads across more than 40 countries. The company is also opening its self-service advertising platform to businesses in markets including India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
This expansion could be important for smaller businesses. Instead of depending entirely on large advertising agencies, companies can use OpenAI’s Ads Manager to create campaigns, set budgets, manage bids and monitor results.
ChatGPT’s advertising model differs from traditional banner advertising. Ads can appear below responses when they are considered relevant to a user's conversation and commercial intent.
According to OpenAI, advertisements are clearly labeled and kept separate from the answers generated by ChatGPT. The company also stated that advertisers do not receive access to users' private conversations.
The platform supports both cost-per-click and cost-per-thousand-impressions advertising models. Advertisers can also use measurement tools to track clicks and conversions.

Advertising gives OpenAI another source of income alongside subscriptions, enterprise products, and API usage. This diversification is important as running large-scale computing infrastructure and developing increasingly advanced models requires enormous investment.
The move also puts OpenAI into more direct competition with established digital advertising businesses operated by companies such as Google and Meta. For ChatGPT users, however, the biggest question is whether advertising can expand without damaging the experience that made the platform popular.
