Sony has confirmed the launch of its next flagship smartphone, Xperia 1 VIII, on May 13. The upcoming model is already drawing attention after a series of leaks hinted at major design and camera upgrades.
The Xperia lineup has built a niche following among photography enthusiasts and power users, largely because Sony continues to offer features that many premium brands have dropped over the years.
Leaked renders suggest Sony may introduce a redesigned rear camera layout. The phone is expected to move away from the company’s traditional vertical camera strip and adopt a larger square-shaped camera module. Reports also suggest a slightly thicker body, indicating improvements in battery capacity and camera hardware.
Sony is likely to retain its flat display design and symmetrical bezels, a feature that sets Xperia phones apart from most Android flagships with punch-hole front cameras. The device is also expected to keep front-facing stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Camera performance is expected to remain one of the biggest highlights of Xperia 1 VIII. Leaks suggest the phone may feature a triple rear camera setup with upgraded sensors across the primary, ultrawide, and telephoto lenses. Some reports claim Sony could use three 48MP sensors for the device.
Sony’s Xperia flagships are known for offering manual photography controls inspired by the company’s Alpha camera series. The upcoming phone may continue targeting users interested in photography and mobile videography.

Xperia 1 VIII is expected to feature a 6.5-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support. Under the hood, the phone could run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with Android 16, 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.
Battery life may also see improvements this year. Reports suggest Sony could market the phone with a two-day battery claim backed by a 5000mAh battery. The company will maintain support for microSD cards because they have become an uncommon feature on high-end smartphones.
Xperia 1 VIII will enter the ultra-premium market segment at its upcoming launch. According to initial reports from Europe, the phone is expected to cost approximately €1,868. However, Sony has not yet officially confirmed the full specifications or pricing details.
